We follow the “How Sick is Too Sick” guidelines from Children’s Hospital and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to determine if a child should remain at school before contacting parents:

When a child becomes ill at school:

• The parents/guardians will be notified that their child must be picked up as soon as possible, not to exceed 1 hour of making contact.
   
• If a parent/guardian cannot be reached, the emergency contact person listed on the emergency card will be called (keeping this information current and accurate within Infinite Campus is crucial).
   
• In case of a more severe injury or illness, “911” will be called for medical assistance, and the parents/guardians will be notified immediately. Emergency personnel will determine if the child should be transported to the closest hospital.

For absences due to extended illness, please provide verification from a physician. If accommodations are needed, Nurse Andria Redman will work with your family and school staff to ensure a smooth return.

The school must be informed of any asthma, anaphylaxis risk, or severe student allergies. Please contact our health aide to provide documentation and determine a plan.

The School follows the policies of its authorizing school district, Brighton School District 27-J, for managing students’ health issues, including asthma, anaphylaxis, or severe allergies.

Please notify the Health Office of any dietary restrictions your child may have. This may include food allergies, celiac disease, or gluten intolerance just to name a few.

If your student has a restricted diet or specific dietary restrictions and would like to eat school-provided food, please have your medical provider complete a Meal Modification Form:

Bromley East Charter School follows the policies of its authorizing school district, Brighton School District 27J, for administering any medications at school.

If your student requires an over the counter or prescription medication please ask your provider to fill out a medical permission form and return the signed form to the health clinic.

Bromley East Charter School conducts hearing and vision screenings at the grade levels required by Colorado State Statute 22-2-116.

Results outside of a normal range for any of these screenings will be mailed to parents/guardians. Parents may opt their child out of these screenings on religious or personal grounds.

Health care plans are student-specific plans that are either provided by a medical provider (asthma action plan, allergy action plan, anxiety action plan, headache action plan) or developed by the School Nurse Consultant after working closely with the family to determine needs.

Schools within the 27j District shall have a stock supply of epinephrine auto-injectors for use in emergency anaphylaxis events that occur on school grounds.

Any administration of a stock epinephrine auto-injector to a student by a district employee shall be in accordance with applicable state law, including applicable State Board of Education rules.

The district's stock supply of epinephrine auto-injectors is not intended to replace student-specific orders or medication provided by the student's parent/guardian to treat the student's asthma, food or other allergy, anaphylaxis, or related, life-threatening condition.

As required by C.R.S. 25-4-902, a student is not allowed to attend any school in the state of Colorado unless he or she has presented one of the following to the appropriate School official: 

1. An up-to-date certificate of immunization or
    
2. A written authorization signed by one parent or legal guardian, an emancipated student, or a student eighteen years of age or older requesting that local public health officials administer the immunizations or
    
3. A certificate of medical exemption, a certificate of completion of the online education module, or a certificate of nonmedical exemption in compliance with C.R.S. 25-4-903. A certificate of medical exemption, a certificate of completion of the online education module, or a certificate of nonmedical exemption is only valid if completed in compliance with C.R.S. 25-4-903.

If the student's certificate of immunization is not up-to-date according to the requirements of the state board of health, and one of the above exceptions is not met, then within fourteen days after receiving direct personal notification from the School that the certificate is not up-to-date, the student must provide documentation that the next required immunization has been given and a written plan for completion of all required immunizations. If the student begins but does not continue or complete the written plan, the student may be suspended or expelled pursuant to state law.

Any immunization record provided by a licensed physician, registered nurse, or public health official may be accepted by the School as certification of immunization if the information is transferred to the official certificate of immunization and verified by an appropriate school official. 

In the event of suspension or expulsion of a student for failure to comply with immunization requirements, the School will notify the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment or the county, district, and municipal public health agency. An agent of said department will then contact the parent or guardian or the emancipated student or student eighteen years of age or older in an effort to secure compliance so that the student may be re-enrolled in school.

The requirements for submitting a nonmedical exemption are as follows:

• To opt out of state-required vaccines, you must either have an exemption signed by a medical care provider OR complete the online module, print the certificate, and submit it to the school health office with your signed exemption.

• Nonmedical exemptions expire every year on June 30.  You must watch the module or have a health care provider sign and complete a new one every school year.

The health office is staffed by two full-time Health Assistants who work under the delegation and supervision of a Registered Nurse. Our Health Office is happy to assist with routine medication administration, aid in injuries, and triage students using illness policies to determine whether a student can stay in school or go home.

The Health Office also tracks school-wide immunizations and can conduct basic hearing and vision screening.
