Buddy Program

Our Buddy Program in action, with groups of Eighth Graders and Kindergarteners playing a game together at tables in a classroom.

The Buddy Program bridges the gap between our youngest and oldest students—wide-eyed kindergarteners ready to learn, and seasoned 8th graders eager to lead—creating moments of growth and connection that leave a lasting impact on both sides.

Through reading, crafts, and shared projects, kindergarteners and 8th graders meet every other week during morning meeting time to learn from and inspire each other.

For 8th graders, it’s a chance to step into a leadership role and be the kind of role model they once looked up to. For kindergarteners, it’s a safe and fun way to practice new skills, build friendships, and feel a little more at home.

Together, they’re building something bigger than crafts or projects—they’re building a community.

How the Buddy Program Works

Every kindergartener and 8th grader at Bromley East is part of the Buddy Program, making it a beloved school-wide tradition. Here’s how it works:

  • It kicks off with Kindergarten and 8th-grade teachers partnering up, thoughtfully pairing their classes to set the stage for connection.

  • At the first meeting, kindergarteners choose their 8th-grade buddy, adding a sense of excitement and ownership to the relationship.

  • Throughout the year, teachers work behind the scenes to plan meaningful activities that make every session fun, productive, and memorable.

No matter how much you talk about and teach leadership, you really only see if you've created leaders by watching them in action. Our Buddy Program provides a great opportunity for our oldest students to be looked up to. We know this program is impactful because each year, 8th graders tell us how they remember their buddy from when they were in kindergarten. It's the kind of thing that builds the foundation of being a Bromley Hawk.

What Happens During a Buddy Session

Every buddy session is short and sweet, but it’s amazing how much connection and joy can be packed into 20 minutes! Here’s what a typical session looks like:

  • The session begins with a fun icebreaker or quick chat to help buddies catch up and get comfortable.

  • Next, they learn and create together. Whether it’s crafting seasonal projects like paper pumpkins, practicing reading and math, or solving problems as a team, buddies dive into activities that bring out their best.

  • The session wraps up with high-fives, big smiles, and sometimes a special keepsake to remind them of the day!

Throughout the school year, from Buddy Breakfasts to the end-of-year celebration, these shared moments capture the heart of the program—joy, connection, and a sense of belonging. Even in just a short time, these sessions create meaningful relationships and memories that leave a lasting impact.
