Hello Parents,

School Accountability Committee – We are pleased to announce the School Accountability Committee for the 2010-2011 school year. Our teacher representatives are 5th grade English teacher, Jon Stein and 2nd grade teacher, Carrie Provencher (alternate). Parent members include Christine Shock, Lisa Roebuck, Brett Murray and Reah DiRito (alternate). The entire administration team is part of the committee also. All parents are encouraged to attend these meetings that will take place the first Monday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the school library. Due to Labor Day, the first meeting will be Tuesday, September 7.

In Colorado, the focus of accountability is at the school level. The local accountability committees function as follows:

• Set prioritization of expenditures of school money
• Meet at least quarterly
• Work on means for determining whether decisions affecting the educational process are advancing or impeding student achievement
• Report educational performance to the public
• Review safety issues
• Each year, adopt high, but achievable goals and objectives for improvement of education in its building and adopt a plan to improve educational achievement in the school, to implement methods of maximizing graduation rates in secondary schools of the district and to increase the rating for the school's accreditation category

New drop-off and pick up procedures – Please review the attached map for drop-off and pick-up procedures. Two changes that you will notice are the location of fifth and sixth graders in the morning and the bus pick-up and drop-off location.

MAP FOR DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP PROCEDURES

1. We are taking the 5th and 6th graders off the bridge and moving them to the front area of the school (near the flagpole) to line up. This will keep the students away from the street and in a safer area. They will be allowed to play on the grass next to the building between 8:00 a.m. – 8:10 a.m. No students will be allowed to play next to the street. All students will line up at 8:10 a.m. Students will form two lines and follow the 3rd and 4th graders into the building.
2. We have asked the before/after school care buses to park in the inlet on the south side of the school (near the park) to pick up and drop off their students. We will have coverage on the sidewalk that leads to the buses at the end of the day pick-up. This will allow the flow of our pick-up at the end of the day to move more quickly.

A reminder to drop off students in the “green zone” in the front and back of the school. Please do not stop in the “red” zones to pick-up or drop-off students.

Please do not park and leave your car when you are in the drop-off/pick-up line (the coned areas). We ask that you follow the directions of the attendant by moving up in the line so we can keep the traffic moving and keep all kids safe.

Be Courteous –Remember we are all here for the safety of our students! Your cooperation with following the rules and the direction of the attendants outside during drop-off and pick-up is appreciated. And please use the crosswalks. I know this means going out of your way a bit, but to keep everyone as safe as possible, this would be a great help to the people on duty.

Student Planners Are In! -- You may now purchase student planners at the front office for $5.00. Thank you for your patience!

Recycle print cartridges – Just drop off your printer cartridges and the school receives $1.00 or $2.00! This is an easy fundraiser in which everyone can take part. Boxes will be located outside of the front office to drop off your used cartridges. Please read the flyer from Hello Eco to learn about other ways you can help support the school.

Lunch Recess Volunteers – We have asked Homeroom Helpers (HRH) to put out an all-call for parent volunteers to assist during lunch and recess time. Volunteering just one day per month can help us tremendously! Just let your HRH know what day is good for you!

GT parent meeting – There will be a meeting for all parents of students who are identified through our Gifted and Talented program on September 9 at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. Parents who are interested in learning more about GT are invited to attend.

Please pick up CSAP Student Reports — It will save the school mailing costs if you are able to pick up your student’s individual reports from the front office. We are extending the time to do this until Friday, September 10. Any folders that are not picked up by Monday, September 13, will be mailed to the home.

Register to Vote! -- In order to vote in the upcoming election, you must be registered to vote. For more information or to register online, click on: http://www.sos.state.co.us/pubs/elections/

Congratulations – One of our eighth grade students, Senida Medina, has been invited to join People to People , an exploration program that selects students to serve as ambassadors around the world. As a Student Ambassador, Senida will travel, study, and do community service in Ireland, Wales, England, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands in the summer of 2011. This is a great opportunity for Senida, and we are so proud of her accomplishment. Great job!

Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September (September 6 in 2010). The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.[1] It became a federal holiday in 1894, when, following the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the U.S. military and U.S. Marshals during the Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with the labor movement as a top political priority.

Have a safe and relaxing Labor Day!

For our children,

Roberta Harrell, Principal
